This two-period (6 & 7) class is offered

at Oak Ridge High School

ROP Business/Marketing Occupations is a full-year (10 credits per semester) course that covers the basic concepts of marketing and business as well as the development of an employability portfolio, which includes creating a resumé and a letter of application, learning interviewing skills, and requesting a letter of recommendation.

Students will be required to attend a daily orientation for the first 4 weeks of the fall semester.  After this orientation period ends, students will attend class only 1 day each week, either on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, on a regular schedule.  The remainder of the week will be spent training—a minimum of 10 hours—with a business site.  The training schedule will be arranged and agreed upon by the student, the instructor, and the business supervisor.  Students will have a choice of training with private or public employers, primarily in one of three areas:

Retailing

Food Services

Distribution/Logistics

Students already employed in a Marketing field, and being scheduled at least 10 hours each week, may receive school credit and earn income at the same time in ROP Cooperative training.  Students, also, have the option of training in an unpaid internship program; many get hired during their training and have the opportunity to continue with this course in the ROP Cooperative program!

Here are some details that you need to know to be in this program:

  1. Expect to have weekly homework and class assignments in this program along with tests.

  2. Excellent attendance is mandatory and part of the overall grade for this class.

  3. All Marketing students are required to have a training site, either paid or unpaid: This is not optional.

  4. Opportunities for an internship program are available for those students who qualify and these internships may be arranged to fit the student’s career path.

  5. Field trips are offered each semester.

There are prerequisites for the ROP Marketing program:

  1. You must be at least 16 years of age.

  2. You must provide your own reliable transportation each day to and from your training site—and cannot share rides with other students.

  3. You must be a Junior or Senior with a maximum of 10 absences within the previous school year (excluding a catastrophic illness).

  4. You must have an overall minimum GPA of 2.5.

  5. You must have a maximum of three referrals within the previous school year.

  6. You must not be serving probation.

  7. Any student who does not meet the above requirements may be interviewed at the instructor’s discretion to obtain prior approval before enrollment.
