2008-09 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS School of Business MARKETING OCCUPATIONS (Y) #0934L1
This course provides students with the opportunity to develop business skills. After the initial classroom orientation period, students will combine weekly classroom instruction with hands-on experience in the community classroom by training with private or public employers. Traditional classroom instruction will cover the fundamentals of marketing that include product, price, promotion, and distribution decisions aimed at meeting the needs of a target market. This instruction will be supplemented with field trips to various business facilities. Industry specific training in the community classroom is available in one of the following areas: retailing, distribution/ logistics, or food services. For students who are currently employed in one of these fields, the ROP Cooperative option is available. This 9-month course integrates math, English, and business writing skills to better prepare students for successful employment in the field of marketing. The development of leadership and employability skills are emphasized throughout the course. Students may also enroll mid-year at the semester break.
INTERMEDIATE LEVEL MARKETING (S) (Y) #0934L2
In this 1- or 2-semester course, the student will apply the basic principles of marketing to case studies and real-world applications by developing marketing and promotional campaigns. Students must provide their own transportation to class and training sites.
INTRODUCTION TO PC’S #0957
This class is for beginning computer students using Microsoft software. Topics covered include computer terminology, using the mouse and keyboard, toolbars and icons, basic Internet skills, introduction to word processing, and saving and printing files.
INTERNET & E-MAIL #0950
This class emphasizes the Internet as a tool. It is designed to increase both understanding and productivity. Topics covered include defining the Internet, navigating websites, finding websites (search tools), Internet security, creating e-mail accounts, customizing e-mail address books, and Yahoo and Outlook Express. This is an intermediate class. Students should be familiar with basic computer terminology, the mouse and keyboard, and menus and toolbars.
PC MANAGEMENT #0958
Personal computers need regular maintenance to operate properly. The primary tools used for maintenance are the Windows operating system and the Internet. Topics covered include hard drive maintenance, protecting yourself (viruses, spyware, fire-walls), installation Microsoft updates, installing and removing software, organization (drives, folders, and files), and backing up and restoring. This is an intermediate class. Students should be familiar with basic computer terminology, the mouse and keyboard, and menus and toolbars. MS OFFICE SPECIALIST CERTIFICATE Students prepare for certification for the MS Office Suite or each individual application if they choose; i.e., Word, Excel, Access or PowerPoint. Students are assessed to determine their skills upon entering the class. Keyboarding skill is necessary (30 words per minute). LEVEL I SPECIALIST This self-paced course is designed for the student who has little or no experience using the computer.
